Abstract

Essential points • Identifying the use of psychoactive substances is essential, particularly during the perinatal period. • Pregnancy presents an opportunity to address the issue of alcohol, which is the most widely consumed psychoactive substance in France and also the most dangerous for the fetus. • The risk of alcohol exposure concerns future fathers and future mothers in the preconception period and mothers throughout pregnancy, from the very first drink. • The consequences of alcohol exposure include the development of disorders grouped under the umbrella of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, of which Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is the most severe form. • The message of "zero alcohol during pregnancy" is still too often dismissed. This is a strong and essential message to prevent many avoidable disorders.
