Hierarchical multi-ions doped nanofibrous matrices for infected skin wound therapy
Abstract
Metal ions are involved in a wide range of biological processes and play a critical role in wound healing. However, the imbalance of metal ions is a common issue that occurs in trauma, resulting in delayed wound healing. Herein, hierarchical multi-ions doped nanofibrous matrices (M@PVA) are fabricated via electrospinning for “on-demand” ions release to meet the requirements of metal ions in different healing stages. In vitro studies reveal that M@PVA nanofibrous matrices have good hydrophilicity, excellent biocompatibility, and favorable antibacterial activity, which make them suitable for treating chronic infection wounds. Further in vivo study finds that M@PVA can effectively prevent bacterial-induced wound infections and enhance skin wound repair by promoting angiogenesis through upregulating hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α). Therefore, M@PVA matrices demonstrate a new potent approach to treat infected wounds.
