Abstract

The Cosserat theory introduces independent microrotations and couple stresses, but its governing equations are often written in ways that obscure the required static-kinematic duality. This work clarifies the dual structure that must exist between the balance equations and the compatibility relations, showing that the differential operators acting on stresses must be the formal adjoint of those acting on the strain measures. In particular, it is shown that the sign of the Levi-Civita coupling is not an arbitrary convention for the theory as a whole: static-kinematic duality and the preservation of energy strictly dictate that the kinematic relations and the angular momentum balance must adopt opposite signs for this term. The implications of this duality are illustrated through an explicit bi-directional derivation and a simple two-dimensional Cosserat example. Furthermore, the classical finite element stiffness matrix is revisited to highlight how the discrete strain–displacement matrix and its algebraic transpose preserve this structure without the sign inversion characteristic of continuous differential adjoints. The results highlight the fundamental role of static-kinematic duality in ensuring energetic consistency in Cosserat linear elasticity.
