Sensory emotional mapping indicators for neurodiverse learners (SEMINEL) framework
Abstract
Neurodiverse learners encounter difficulties in a culinary learning environment. This paper introduces the SEMINEL (Sensory Emotional Mapping Indicators for Neurodiverse Learners) framework which emphasizes scenario-based analysis of sensory triggers and emotional responses of neurodiverse learners with sensory difficulties, and aims to provide a methodology to identify the embedded risks and offer adaptive support strategies to learners. SEMINEL Framework assists educators and researchers to identify discomfort and withdrawal from culinary tasks by the neurodiverse learners and enables them to provide interventions that are tailored specifically to the needs of the learners and promote inclusivity while performing the task. The SEMINEL framework is grounded on simulated culinary classroom scenarios which is drawn from existing material on inclusive education for neurodiverse learners and adaptive teaching techniques. The methodology is useful for application in the initial stages of understanding learner behaviour in an inclusive culinary classroom setting. The SEMINEL Framework uses simulated classroom scenarios to identify sensory emotional indicators in neurodiverse learners. The framework contributes to inclusive pedagogy by offering adaptive support strategies to educators to promote inclusive learning. The application of this framework can be extended beyond culinary environment to be applied in any sensory rich learning scenario involving neurodiverse learners.
