Microstructural tailoring to promote Portevin-Le Chatelier effect in laser powder bed fusion fabricated AlMgScZr alloy
Abstract
The microstructure of an AlMgScZr alloy was successfully tailored via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). Employing keyhole melting mode resulted in the occurrence of mixed type A+B Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect with a substantial threefold increase in ductility and a modest enhancement in tensile strength. The underlying mechanism was ascribed to the balanced microstructure of the keyhole samples with a finer grain size, shorter Burgers vector, and less microstrain, which facilitates continuous deformation via PLC. This study offers new insights into property design during LPBF.
