Abstract

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurologic disorders, affecting 3.5 million Americans, and more than 65 million people worldwide. A third of these patients have drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) [1] with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) being the most common type. The burden of DRE is high; ongoing seizures can be very debilitating, and are often associated with significant morbidity and mortality [2]. Many of these patients endure ongoing cognitive impairment related to persisting seizures and polypharmacy, which in turn has been associated with low quality of life related to difficulties the disorder poses on education, employment and relationships [3].
