Characterization and applications of the LaBr3 array at HUN-REN ATOMKI
Abstract
A high-efficiency γ -ray spectrometer at HUN-REN Institute for Nuclear Research (HUN-REN ATOMKI), the LAnthanum Bromide Detector Array (LABDA) has been designed and constructed to study low-probability phenomena in particle physics, nuclear spectroscopy, and nuclear astrophysics experiments. The array is comprised of 12 cylindrically shaped LaBr 3 (Ce) crystals, each measuring 3 ′ ′ × 3 ′ ′ , produced by Saint-Gobain. Key performance parameters of the array have been systematically characterized over a broad γ -ray energy range (344–10762 keV), including energy resolution, energy non-linearity, detection efficiency, time resolution and intrinsic background. Intrinsic background suppression, using pulse-shape discrimination methods has been also investigated. The prospects for applying the array to different nuclear physics measurements are discussed.
