PVsyst optimized solar energy-based charging station for floor cleaning robots in educational institute: A green campus initiative
Abstract
Automated floor-cleaning robots are increasingly being used in large facilities, including educational institutions. However, their dependence on grid-based charging often reduces the very sustainability gains they are meant to provide. This paper explores the viability of a standalone solar photovoltaic (PV) charging station designed specifically for such robots to be deployed in educational institution premises. The study involves software simulation and hardware experimentation. A functional prototype was built around a 750 Wp photovoltaic array and a lead-acid battery bank. Subsequent simulation in PVsyst V7.3.4 validates the technical feasibility of the system. The simulated results, based on the meteorological data for Asansol, show that the station can reliably supply the robots' annual gross energy demand of 2.025 kWh/day using solar power, with seasonal energy buffering managed by the battery bank. The economic analysis indicates that the proposed model has a simple payback period of 14.9 years and an LCOE of 5.44 ₹/kWh; these figures are expected to improve significantly with advancements in battery technology. This study thus provides a validated techno-economic benchmark, demonstrating the current viability and future potential of decentralized solar-powered robotic services.
