Nanobots in medicine and beyond: From targeted drug delivery to intelligent environmental remediation
Abstract
Nanobots, or nanoscale robots, represent a revolutionary advancement in nanotechnology with the potential to transform numerous fields, especially medicine and environmental management. This review delves into the current state of nanobot technology, highlighting their design, development, and diverse applications. The fabrication of nanobots utilizes advanced techniques such as DNA origami, which enables precise molecular folding to create complex structures, and 3D nanoprinting for intricate nanoscale designs. Propulsion mechanisms for nanobots include catalytic systems that generate thrust through chemical reactions, magnetic propulsion controlled by external fields, and light-driven systems offering precise spatial and temporal control. Their sensing and actuation capabilities are equally sophisticated, with nanobots equipped to detect specific biological markers and perform targeted actions like drug delivery or cell interaction. In medicine, nanobots promise to revolutionize drug delivery by targeting therapeutic agents directly to disease sites, minimizing side effects and improving efficacy. They also offer potential breakthroughs in precision surgery, enabling minimally invasive procedures with high accuracy, and enhancing diagnostics through early disease detection and advanced imaging integration. Beyond medicine, nanobots hold significant promise for environmental and industrial applications, including pollution control through water purification and soil and air pollution management, and transforming industrial manufacturing with nanoscale fabrication and repair capabilities. Despite their potential, challenges such as scalability, durability, and power supply need to be addressed, alongside ethical considerations and regulatory frameworks. Future research is focused on developing advanced materials for improved performance and integrating artificial intelligence to enhance nanobot functionality and autonomy. As advancements continue, nanobots are set to make substantial contributions to both practical applications and fundamental scientific research, offering innovative solutions to complex challenges and enhancing human health and environmental sustainability.
