Influence of palmyra palm sprouts with E-glass and SiC on mechanical properties of hybrid laminated composites
Abstract
Natural and Synthetic reinforced hybrid composites nowadays growing demand for sustainable and high-performance applications. The present study experimented the influence of Borassus flabellifer (palmyra palm) sprouts, E-glass fibers, and silicon carbide (SiC) powder on the Tensile, Flexural, Shear and Hardness Tests, as well as thermal properties. It reports the need for eco-friendly materials with better structural capabilities. The alkali treated palmyra sprouts using 5% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and then washed with distilled water to increase their bond with the polymer matrix. The laminated hybrid composite were fabricated using the compression molding method in four distinct ratios namely 20:20:10, 20:10:10, 10:20:10, and 10:10:10 (Palmyra:SiC:E-glass). By comparing the performance of the four different kinds of hybrid laminated plates, the study reveals the best reinforcing combinations that strike a cooperation between strength, stiffness, and moisture resistance. 10:10:10 composite plate scores the highest tensile strength of 68.7 MPa and shear stress of 68.0 MPa among the four plates. The 10:20:10 plate having higher SiC has a peak flexural strength of 130.22 MPa, signifying the SiC contribution proves to improve the stiffness and flexural properties of composite materials. The growing focus on eco-friendly composites and the ideas of the circular economy have sparked research on hybrid materials that combine natural fibers with high-performance reinforcements to achieve both environmental sustainability and structural reliability.
