Nanotechnology-based novel approaches for the treatment of tuberculosis
Abstract
Tuberculosis is an airborne, ancient infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis , which primarily affects the lungs as well as other body organs and tissues. Antibiotic resistance is the main barrier to the cure and eradication of tuberculosis, with halfa million new cases of drug-resistant tuberculosis every year. The resistant strains, latency, lengthy treatment, reduced bioavailability, and drug toxicity represents hazard to global health. Although new antibiotics like Bedaquiline, Telacebec, and Pretomanid have been developed, there is a demand for alternative therapies with greater efficacy and stability. Therefore, a significant approach using novel strategies for combating the disease is required. Undoubtedly, the concept of using nanotechnology has strong potential for treating tuberculosis and offers remarkable results to overcome the disease. Moreover, the current study emphasized the status of different types of nanoforms for the treatment of tuberculosis.
