Abstract

The aim of this paper is to provide researchers with a simple tool to estimate the propulsion dimensioning in the early design stages of an underwater robot equipped with a flexible biomimetic propulsion unit. Unlike tools commonly used for the design of AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) propelled with traditional propulsion systems, the present one considers the integration of the different disciplines involved, enabling a preliminary decision-making process and faster iteration, ensuring that the initial design phases are efficient. In addition, the paper proposes a method for optimizing caudal fin configurations, allowing designers to choose the best geometry, material, and operating parameters based on specific performance needs. This tool helps overcome some of the size and material limitations that are typically encountered in laboratory studies. In general, the article emphasizes the interdisciplinary approach needed to advance the development of fish-like robots, integrating insights from fluid and structural dynamics, biomechanics, materials science, and control systems.
