The enhanced high-temperature water vapor oxidation resistance of SiC reticulated porous ceramics with mullite-Yb2SiO5 coating for zero-carbon porous burner
Abstract
SiC reticulated porous ceramic (SRPC) is a core component for zero-carbon porous burner using ammonia fuel. SRPC is being subjected to severe oxidation by high-temperature water vapor. In this work, the mullite-Yb 2 SiO 5 double coating was designed to synergistically improve mechanical property and water vapor oxidation resistance of SRPC. The mullite-Yb 2 SiO 5 coating with excellent interface characteristic were successfully constructed via vacuum infiltration as well as dip-coating. The main pore size of SiC strut containing double coating shifted from micrometer to submicron in comparison with that of original strut. The formed coating tripled the strength of SRPC and enhanced their resistance to water vaper oxidation. After high-temperature water vapor oxidation at 1400 °C, the residual strength retention ratio of SRPC increased remarkably from 27% to 93.5% with the formation of the mullite- Yb 2 SiO 5 coating. This improvement was attributed to the reduction of residual tensile stress generated in the Yb 2 SiO 5 layer.
