A shift of paradigm, emerging role of miRNAs as therapeutic targets for complex disease
Abstract
Liver disease is among the leading contributors to global morbidity and mortality, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) now ranks as the fourth most prevalent cancer worldwide.1 Chronic liver pathology typically emerges along a continuum that begins with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) or alcohol-associated disease and progresses from simple steatosis to steatohepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and ultimately, HCC.2,3 Identifying the molecular regulators that allow hepatocytes to withstand metabolic and inflammatory stress is, therefore, essential for developing new effective therapeutic approaches.
