Encore Creativity for Older Adults: Exploring the Benefits of Choral Singing for Healthy Aging
Abstract
Objectives Globally, there is significant research interest in the impact of singing on the health and well-being of older adults. We conducted an online survey of singers with Encore Creativity for Older Adults, the largest choral singing program for older adults in the nation. This study examines demographics, musical experience, and barriers to participation, and explores the extent to which Encore participation is associated with self-reported and current health, mental health, life satisfaction and well-being. Methods/Measurements An online, cross-sectional survey included the RAND 20-Item Short Form Survey, NIH Satisfaction with Life Scale, UCLA Loneliness Scale, and new measures of Encore singing experience. We conducted various multiple regression analyses. Participants Eight hundred eighty-six largely female (80%), White (94.1%) with 88.3% falling between the ages of 65 and 84. Results Regression analyses identified physical functioning, mental health, social functioning and life satisfaction as significant predictors of self-reported health and current health. Length of Encore participation was associated with higher life satisfaction. Singers reported that singing provides them a source of joy, purpose, challenge and social connection. Conclusions This study suggests that choral singing offers promising opportunities to enhance physical and mental health and well-being for older adults. Future research will be critical to understanding the extent to which and the mechanisms through which singing in an ensemble and engagement in Encore special programs can contribute to health and well-being for older adults.
