Abstract

We establish a non-equilibrium statistical mechanics foundation for studying entropy and enthalpy in quantum many-body systems. Working within the three-state truncation ( j = 0 , 1 / 2 , 1 ) of the S U ( 2 ) k fusion category, we treat fusion-splitting processes as the fundamental dynamical mechanism for entropy-enthalpy exchange, derive the non-equilibrium master equation, define the categorical entropy and entropy production rate, and provide an analytical self-consistency verification. The key results are: 1) the master equation admits the detailed balance distribution n j e q ∝ d j 2 e − β E j as its unique steady-state solution;2) the categorical entropy satisfies S = ln D − ∑ j n j ln d j − ∑ j n j ln n j , which reduces to the topological entanglement entropy in the vacuum limit;3) the entropy production rate is analytically proven to be non-negative, σ ( t ) ≥ 0 , satisfying the second law of thermodynamics;4) the system asymptotically converges to equilibrium from any initial state. This framework provides a tractable platform for investigating the non-equilibrium dynamics of entropy-enthalpy competition in quantum many-body systems. It can be directly extended to more complex fusion categories relevant to anyon condensation and topological phase transitions, and lays a conceptual foundation for understanding the dynamical approach to confinement in 2+1 dimensional gauge theories (which share certain structural features with QCD in some limits) from a categorical perspective.
