Abstract

The digital representation of a physical asset is a key factor regarding the digital twin. The idea of Asset Administration Shells (AAS) aiming at consistent asset description and data exchange across different manufacturers is gaining ground. Yet, in its early stages, widespread implementation is lacking in the industrial landscape. Consequently, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face challenges in creating or accessing AAS. We provide an overview of the principles and capabilities of AAS and discuss a practical implementation that automatically generates AAS from a centralized resource description of assets within an ERP system.
