Abstract

Wire laser-based Directed Energy Deposition (DED-LB/M) process is opted for the manufacturing and repair of high-quality, dense and cost-efficient parts. However, it is prone to instabilities caused by the variation of standoff distance within subsequent layers due to under and over-build of a part. In this work, these phenomena are captured with an embedded on the deposition head load cell which detects the forces on the wire feeding mechanism during the process. The in-line monitoring system is tested in thin walls and overlapping tracks, characterizing a process as stable while also detecting balling and wire collision due to insufficient melting.
