Abstract

The successful and cost-effective manufacturing of sheet metal formed components depends on the collaboration between the designer and tool maker. Poorly designed features might render the manufacturing of the respective die unfeasible. This paper proposes a manufacturability assessment tool for sheet metal forming to be used during the product design stage, addressing the need for quick design evaluation. Requiring minimal user input, it identifies all the necessary part features and assesses their manufacturing feasibility, based on pre-defined rules, while addition of custom rules is possible to incorporate user knowledge. Finally, redesign guidelines are provided for unfeasible part features.
