Abstract

Current trends towards sustainable manufacturing systems require machining processes to become more energy efficient. In this work, a method to reduce the energy consumption of a milling process using an adaptive feed rate control system is presented. The developed system responds to varying cutting conditions to optimize cycle time, thus, the required energy used by the machining components can be reduced. The approach has been evaluated in a laboratory setup using a multifunctional turning-milling center and various power meters for energy data collection.
