Abstract

Decision-making for novel aviation technologies requires reliable assessment tools that capture both economic profitability and environmental sustainability over the entire life cycle. This paper presents the conceptual architecture and methodological basis of the discrete-event simulation framework LYFE² (Life Cycle Analysis Framework for Environment & Economics). LYFE² bridges economic and environmental perspectives by integrating Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Cost Benefit Assessment (LCCB) into a unified, event-driven modelling environment. This means that the aircraft life cycle is represented by discrete events, including each individual flight and maintenance event as well as production and end-of-life events. By combining discrete-event simulation with integrated LCA-LCCB analysis, LYFE² allows users to analyse different system architectures, maintenance strategies, fleet operations, and decision-making logics. The framework thus supports strategic planning and technology assessment from both an eco-efficiency and a life cycle perspective.
