Butane inhalation abuse: A bibliometric analysis (1954–2024)
Abstract
BACKGROUND Rising global butane-related abuse necessitates urgent public health research. AIM The aim of this bibliometric analysis is to provide a comprehensive overview of the existing research on butane-related abuse. By examining publication trends, journal distributions, author collaborations, and citation networks, this study seeks to identify research frontiers and gaps in the field. METHODS Web of Science data (1954-2024) were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative methods, assessing publication trends, themes, and collaboration networks. RESULTS Annual publications increased modestly (2.59% growth rate), modeled by y=0.0029×2+0.1067x+0.766 (R2=0.584). Contributions spanned 219 institutions across 53 countries, yielding 143 interdisciplinary publications. Key journals included Drug and Alcohol Dependence and Legal Medicine. Emerging priorities focused on "cannabis concentrates," "adolescent substance use," and health-legal implications. Influential studies informed policy and public health strategies. CONCLUSION The identified trends, including the rise of cannabis concentrates and focus on adolescent vulnerability, underscore critical areas for targeted investigation. By mapping key contributions and emerging frontiers, this study provides a foundation for future research to address existing gaps, enhance prevention efforts, and mitigate the public health burden of butane inhalation abuse.
