Role of aeration in semi-permeable membrane-assisted aerobic composting: A comprehensive review
Abstract
Aerobic composting, a widely used technology for the resource-based disposal of organic solid waste, is closely linked to process regulation. This review systematically evaluates the mechanisms and research findings related to aeration in membrane-covered aerobic composting. It highlights the key regulatory role of aeration strategies in core physicochemical parameters, such as temperature and moisture content, and their significant impact on the emission of greenhouse and odor gases. Additionally, changes in aeration patterns influence microbial community structure and composition, driving dynamic shifts in bacterial and archaeal communities, which in turn regulate organic substrate degradation and gas emission behavior. This review aims to elucidate the impact mechanisms of aeration strategies in aerobic composting, providing a theoretical basis for optimizing aeration parameters in practical applications.
