Linguistic ethnography in post-digital field sites – methodological challenges of bridging online and offline contexts
Abstract
Current post-digital conditions have encouraged researchers within sociolinguistics, applied linguistics and linguistic ethnography to develop methodologies that examine language and social interaction across online and offline contexts in order to address the interplay between digital, physical and hybrid dimensions of social life. Fueled by post-digital perspectives, there is a prevailing emphasis on the naturalization of “the digital”, whereby it is treated as an unremarkable aspect of everyday life. While this scholarly effort has productively highlighted the hybridity and interconnectedness of online and offline activities, it tends to overlook how individuals also treat and experience these activities as separate and disconnected. This article offers a fine-grained account of the current post-digital condition by examining the methodological challenges and consequences that emerge when online and offline contexts are perceived as either entangled or disconnected. Drawing on participants’ and researchers’ metascientific reflections, using field notes and social media data, the article focuses on key methodological and ethical challenges such as maintaining access to field sites and revisiting informed consent, negotiating field roles, and balancing participant observation in ways that reflect participants’ varied engagements with online and offline social life. The analysis illustrates that the smartphone functions as a key tool for conducting ethnographic fieldwork across online and offline contexts, tracing everyday language use under current post-digital conditions. By foregrounding online-offline dynamics, the article contributes to ongoing debates within applied linguistics, sociolinguistics and linguistic ethnography and argues for a methodological sensitivity that recognizes both online-offline interconnectedness and separation as consequential for contemporary ethnographies.
