Skeletal assemblage fluctuations within persistent Mediterranean coral-reef framework during Cenozoic warming events
Abstract
• Three reef systems developed during diverse Cenozoic warming events are analysed • Despite climate shifts every system supported a coral dominated organic buildup • Foraminifera peak in the Eocene, corals in the Oligocene, and algae in the Miocene • Coral reef factories appear to be resilient, compromised only by extreme heat or combined stressors
