Abstract

Approximately one-third of the world’s irrigated areas employ sprinkler irrigation systems. However, the design process for these systems is often fragmented and error-prone. Designers typically depend on a range of resources, including climate spreadsheets, manufacturer catalogues, hydraulic calculators, and CAD drawings, to complete a sprinkler irrigation system design. Most existing integrated platforms for sprinkler irrigation system design are proprietary, costly, and inaccessible to many practitioners. OpenIrri is an open-source Python platform that consolidates the solid-set sprinkler irrigation system design process into a unified, repeatable workflow using Streamlit. The workflow encompasses climate and crop water analysis, sprinkler selection based on the Christiansen uniformity equation, operational design determined by water source and operating hours, lateral and mainline hydraulics calculations using the Hazen–Williams equation with multi-outlet correction, pump selection considering pump head, efficiency, and net positive suction head, as well as field layout and cost estimation. OpenIrri utilises Google Earth Engine to access remote climate data and to host a cloud project manager that saves, lists, and reopens complete design snapshots as Earth Engine assets. The platform also generates professional PDF and Excel reports for design documentation. As the initial module of a modular pressurised irrigation toolkit, OpenIrri lowers financial barriers for designers, enhances the auditability of research algorithms, and serves as a verifiable, open-source educational resource for students.
