LHmom: An R package for higher order L-moment estimation
Abstract
The LHmom R package provides a comprehensive framework for parameter estimation using higher-order L-moments (LH-moments), a robust statistical method that assigns greater weight to upper-tail observations. The software facilitates parameter estimation across LH-moment orders zero through four ( η = 0 to 4 ) for ten continuous probability distributions widely utilized in hydrological and atmospheric research. These encompass the generalized extreme value (GEV), Gumbel, generalized Pareto, generalized Gumbel, generalized logistic, generalized normal, Pearson Type III, three-parameter kappa (with fixed k or h ), and highly flexible four-parameter kappa distributions. To support rigorous analytical workflows, LHmom integrates essential diagnostic tools, including a universal Quantile-Quantile plotting function for visual goodness-of-fit validation, and an explicit implementation of Wang’s goodness-of-fit test for the GEV distribution. Furthermore, the package incorporates built-in historical environmental datasets to demonstrate immediate applicability in flood frequency analysis and extreme climatic event modeling. Ultimately, LHmom equips researchers and practitioners with a complete, open-source toolkit for advanced extreme value applications.
