Abstract

This study examines the job satisfaction of kindergarten teachers in the southeastern (SE) region of Slovenia, focusing on the relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic factors and overall job satisfaction. Using a quantitative approach, we surveyed a representative sample of 360 teachers and analyzed the data with non-parametric tests. The results reveal a strong relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic factors and overall job satisfaction, with intrinsic factors having a greater influence. The results also provide evidence for improving job satisfaction and retention of teachers in early childhood education. Our study makes a substantial contribution to the field by providing context-specific insights for kindergarten teachers in SE Slovenia, an area that has previously been underexplored. • Intrinsic and extrinsic factors both strongly correlate with teachers' job satisfaction. • Kindergarten teachers report higher intrinsic than extrinsic job satisfaction. • Context-specific drivers shaping job satisfaction are discussed. • Workload and compensation concerns can be addressed through class-size and promotion reforms.
