Abstract

This study introduces human physiology literacy as a novel, discipline-specific framework that addresses the need for functional biological understanding in both education and society. Through a systematic literature review (SLR) guided by the PRISMA protocol, 39 peer-reviewed articles published between 2014 and 2024 were analyzed from the Scopus database. The analysis synthesizes insights from science literacy, health literacy, and biology education to identify four core dimensions: (1) conceptual understanding, (2) designing investigations, (3) applying evidence-based knowledge, and (4) scientific communication ethics. These dimensions emphasize internal biological mechanisms, such as homeostasis, system integration, and physiological adaptation, not fully addressed by existing literacy frameworks. This study contributes a transferable model that supports cognitive and investigative competencies and empowers individuals to engage in scientifically grounded health decisions. The framework offers practical implications for physiology curriculum design, interdisciplinary learning, and science communication in diverse educational and societal contexts.
