Paediatric nursing in bachelor's degree programmes
Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine the emphasis on paediatric nursing in Norwegian nursing education. Method In this study, a mixed-method explanatory sequential design was employed. Mixed-method research involves the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data. Design theory emphasizes that a significant amount of published research in the social and human sciences incorporates mixed methods. This study employed a mixed method explanatory sequential design with 18 survey respondents and text analysis. Findings highlight the impact of cohort size and specialist teachers, but are limited by sample size and institutional variability. Results The study findings indicate that the size of the nursing student cohort has an impact on paediatric nursing practices. Compared with larger cohorts, smaller student cohorts demonstrated more positive outcomes. Furthermore, the research revealed that specialist teachers in paediatric nursing played a significant role in the quality of education provided. The incorporation of simulated case scenarios, particularly those involving interprofessional collaboration, proved to be beneficial in teaching paediatric nursing to nursing students. Conclusion Due to the lack of emphasis on paediatric nursing within nursing faculties and inadequate internship opportunities for students, the importance of this area of nursing has been overlooked in nursing education. Nursing students have limited and varied exposure to the care of sick children during their training. There is a need for increased attention to paediatric nursing in nursing education.
