Abstract

Personal care products (PCPs) considered contaminants of emerging concern are continuously released into the environment. They comprise different families of compounds with highly diverse chemical properties and their presence has been reported in all environmental compartments at very varied concentrations, making analysis a challenge. This review comprehensively provides 10-years overview (2015-early 2026) with the most relevant sorbent-based extraction applications to determine different families of PCPs including fragrances (allergens and musks), ultraviolet filters, preservatives, plasticizers and siloxanes in environmental matrices. The recent advances in sorbent-based technologies including solid-phase extraction and microextraction, stir bar sorptive extraction, rotating-disk sorptive extraction, vacuum-assisted sorbent extraction, fabric phase-sorptive extraction, and quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged & safe extraction will be addressed. Last technological progresses, novel sorbent materials comprising those based on nanoparticles, magnetic phases, metal organic frameworks, and natural materials including recycled organic waste, miniaturized and in-situ devices complying the green sample preparation principles, will be presented.
