Terminology of anatomical variations of the abducens nerve: a concise note
Abstract
Numerous anatomical variations of the abducens nerve have been reported in the literature, but their description is affected by inconsistent and historically rooted terminology. The aim of this study is to provide a concise and pragmatic overview of terminology used to describe abducens nerve variations, with emphasis on anatomical clarity and segmental anatomy. A descriptive approach focused on segmental extent of duplication, splitting or early division of the abducens nerve may improve terminological consistency and comparability between reports. • The paper discusses terminological inconsistencies in descriptions of abducens nerve anatomical variations. • The paper presents a pragmatic framework based on nerve roots, trunks and segmental anatomy. • The paper proposes clear distinctions between duplication, splitting, branching, and early division.
