Abstract

This paper proposed a fuzzy controller-based wind emulator for grid-connected self-excited induction generator (SEIG)-fed wind energy systems to improve emulator performance. The dynamic and mechanical characteristics of the wind emulator are obtained using a 2.5 kW DC motor. A DC-DC converter is employed in the emulator the designed buck converter enables variable wind speed operations. The proposed Type 2 fuzzy logic controllers (FLC2s) are utilized to control the current of the armature winding of the DC motor in the wind emulator and the voltage of the capacitor (DC-link) of the grid-side converter (GSC). The controller provides gate pulses for the buck converter to control the DC motor and for GSC to control the output power of SEIG. A field-programmable gate array (FPGA) based WAVECT wcu300 controller is used. The prototype has been tested with a grid-connected SEIG at variable wind speed operations, and its performance has been validated.
