From mahjong tables to meta-capabilities: What East-West contrasts really teach us about cognition
Abstract
Those encountering American mahjong for the first time are often struck by something even before the tiles begin to move: the scoring table. Dense, meticulous, and almost intimidating, it lays out every conceivable hand, assigns each a precise point value, and carries an implicit promise—that the game, in all its uncertainty, can be rendered fully legible through calculation. American mahjong reformers, guided by a scientific impulse, have painstakingly analyzed the probabilities of tile combinations and translated them into formalized scoring systems, revised annually.
