Beyond Hemodynamics: Shifting Challenges to Heart Transplantation While on Left Ventricular Assist Device Support
Abstract
Heart transplantation (HT) remains the gold standard for long-term therapy in carefully selected patients with advanced heart failure. Access to this life-saving therapy is often constrained by barriers related to both donor availability and recipient limitations. A complex and evolving set of clinical, psychosocial, and structural barriers can affect candidacy.(Peled, et al. 2024) In some patients, durable left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) can serve as long-term therapy (LT) for those who do not qualify for HT, or as a bridge to decision (BTD) or transplant for those with potentially modifiable barriers.
