Recognising type 5 diabetes
Abstract
The international consensus statement on type 5 diabetes1 provides a timely, evidence-based framework to classify a distinct form of diabetes observed in lean individuals with a life-course history of undernutrition. This entity—historically referred to as malnutrition-related diabetes—was first described nearly 70 years ago but later removed from the WHO classification despite growing evidence of its unique pathophysiology.2,3 The Vellore Declaration's call for formal recognition of type 5 diabetes is both scientifically justified and ethically imperative.
