Liquid-Phase Selective Hydrogenation of Cumyl Hydroperoxide to α-Cumyl Alcohol over the Low-Loaded Pt/SiO 2 Catalyst under Ambient Conditions
Abstract
Cumyl hydroperoxide was hydrogenated to α-cumyl alcohol with a selectivity exceeding 99% under ambient conditions using a 0.25% Pt/SiO 2 catalyst prepared via an impregnation method. This catalyst enables us to achieve an exceptionally high turnover frequency (TOF) of 23470 h –1 (6.52 s –1 ), nearly five times greater than the TOF value obtained over a commercial 1% Pd/AC catalyst, and the highest one reported in the patents and publications so far. The developed method for α-cumyl alcohol synthesis under ambient conditions has demonstrated an excellent scalability allowing for the production of α-cumyl alcohol of a high purity in gram quantities at room temperature and atmospheric pressure.
