Abstract

Abstract We report the discovery of a hitherto unknown reactivity consisting of self-coupling of a benzimidazolato–pyridinium zwitterion (1) leading to compound rac -3 with an intriguing atropoisomeric structural scaffold. This novel compound rac -3 was structurally characterized and investigated by DFT and TD-DFT calculations. Compound rac -3 shows rare single-component white light dual emission properties, which may pave the way for new opportunities in organic chemistry for luminescent materials, biology, or catalysis.
