A Cloud-Based Hyperspectral Framework for Scalable and Sustainable Soil Analysis
Abstract
High Resolution Image Download MS PowerPoint Slide Assessing soils over large areas like Brazil faces challenges due to limited laboratory infrastructure, high costs, and environmental concerns linked to excessive chemical use. Reflectance spectroscopy and cloud computing offer quick, scalable, and environmentally friendly alternatives. This study reviews the Brazilian Soil Spectral Service (BraSpecS), a cloud-based hyperspectral platform designed to predict soil attributes through online versus offline modeling. Seventeen collaborators provided topsoil samples with wet laboratory data to model Clay (3570) and soil organic carbon (SOC, 4129) using the visible, near-infrared, short wave infrared (Vis-NIR-SWIR, 350–2500 nm) via Cubist algorithm. Predictions made by BraSpecS were validated externally using R, and an extensive national spectral library (about 50,000 samples) was also modeled to assess overall performance. The global online model achieved an R 2 of 0.80 and an RMSE of 75.05 g kg –1 for Clay, and an R 2 of 0.63 with an RMSE of 7.28 g kg –1 for SOC, which is roughly 12% lower in R 2 compared to the offline models. Local spectral libraries showed similar patterns, with external validation slightly exceeding online predictions. Still, BraSpecS enables real-time, cost-effective, and sustainable soil diagnostics, reducing waste, energy use, and dependence on laboratory facilities. By expanding access to soil data, BraSpecS supports sustainable land management, environmental monitoring, and climate-resilient agriculture across Brazil.
