Abstract

Achieving both scalable manufacturing and reprogrammability remains a central challenge in the development of soft magnetic actuators. Here, we present a scalable method for fabricating reprogrammable soft magnetic actuators using a roll-to-roll slot-die coating technique. In this method, neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) magnetic particles are encapsulated within polyethylene glycol (PEG), forming thermally tunable microspheres. These PEG@NdFeB particles are dispersed within a styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS) elastomer matrix and slot-die coated onto a flexible substrate under optimized conditions. This method enables continuous, high-throughput production of large-area flexible magnetic films with various thicknesses without the need for sacrificial layers or complex patterning steps. The resulting films can be readily cut into arbitrary shapes, allowing seamless integration with customized actuator designs for specific applications. Importantly, the actuators exhibit postfabrication reprogrammability. By heating the material above PEG’s melting point and applying an external magnetic field, the magnetic domains can be realigned. Upon cooling, the magnetization profile is fixed, enabling repeated reconfiguration without structural degradation. The actuators demonstrate a variety of programmable deformations under external magnetic fields, including high-frequency cantilever bending, directional crawling via traveling waves, and rolling motion induced by rotating magnetic fields. These findings highlight the potential of this approach for untethered soft robotics and adaptive biomedical devices that benefit from scalable, flexible, and reconfigurable actuation.
