Abstract

CO 2 and H 2 O are abundant small molecules in nature. However, the concomitant use of these compounds for catalytic carbon–carbon bond formation is limited. Here, we report the photoredox/cobalt dual-catalyzed syn -selective hydrocarboxylation of propargyl amides employing CO 2 and H 2 O as reagents without relying on conventional chemical hydride equivalents (dialkyl zinc or hydrosilanes). This method provides β 2 -amino acid and α,β 2 -peptide precursors with up to 20:1 regioselectivity, thus circumventing the hazardous catalytic hydrocyanation–hydrolysis protocol.
