Triboelectrically Induced Chemical Reactions: Bridging Mechanical Energy and Sustainable Chemistry
Abstract
Amid escalating global energy crises, climate challenges, and ecological degradation, triboelectrically driven chemical reactions (TDCRs) emerge as a promising low-energy solution for energy transition, environmental remediation, and resource recovery by redefining mechanochemical energy conversion. By harnessing mechanical stimuli to induce electron transfer at triboelectric interfaces─while simultaneously generating strong electric fields at electrochemical electrode interfaces or between polymer particles and water─TDCRs indirectly or directly facilitate redox reactions. Owing to their broad material compatibility, high reaction efficiency, versatile applicability, and full-lifecycle green attributes, this technology has garnered significant attention and demonstrated immense potential in both mechanochemistry research and practical applications. This perspective systematically analyzes electron transfer and electric field-driven redox pathways at triboelectric interfaces, summarizing current advances, and application domains of TDCRs, while identifying key challenges impeding their development and proposing feasible solutions to overcome these obstacles.
