Brazilian Geopropolis from Melipona mondury : A Natural Source of Antioxidant and Antifungal Compounds
Abstract
High Resolution Image Download MS PowerPoint Slide Geopropolis produced by Melipona mondury stingless bees, which incorporates soil or clay into its matrix, was investigated for its chemical profile, antioxidant capacity, and antifungal activity against Candida albicans and Sporothrix brasiliensis . The ethanolic extract (EEGP) was analyzed by LC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS and found to contain phenolic acids, flavonoids, and terpenes. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents ranged from 0.84 to 3.63 mg GAE·100 mg –1 and 0.61 to 1.44 mg QE·100 mg –1, respectively, in agreement with Brazilian regulatory standards for propolis-based products. Antioxidant activity, assessed via the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, yielded IC 50 values ranging from 54.4 to 158.9 μg·mL –1 . Antifungal activity, determined by broth microdilution, revealed minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) between 281.25 and 1125 μg·mL –1 . Although higher than those reported for other bee-derived products, the MICs observed for the crude extract (EEGP) highlight its potential as a natural source of antioxidant and antifungal agents.
