In Conversation with Gregory M. Lanza
Abstract
Louis, is internationally recognized as a pioneer in molecular imaging and translational nanomedicine.A physician-scientist and innovator spanning cardiology, biomedical engineering, and nanomedicine, Dr. Lanza has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed papers, delivered over 150 invited lectures worldwide, and holds more than 30 issued U.S. patents. His innovations and co-inventionsincluding targeted perfluorocarbon nanoparticles, fibrin-specific molecular probes, lipase-labile nanotherapeutics, next-generation MRI and Spectral CT agents, and artificial erythrocyte mimicshave seeded multiple companies and advanced toward first-in-human studies across cardiovascular, oncologic, and device-related applications. He directs the Consortium for Translational Research in Advanced Imaging and Nanomedicine (C-TRAIN) and is a member of the Siteman Cancer Center. His career began in recombinant DNA-based biologics at Monsanto, contributing to the development and regulatory approval of Posilac, before earning his MD at Northwestern University and completing cardiology training at Washington University.Throughout this journey, he has served as an exceptional role model and source of inspiration for countless junior faculty members, students, and colleagues, demonstrating how bold ideas and disciplined translation can reshape medicine. In this conversation, Dr. Lanza reflects on the curiosity, visionary thinking, and transformative ideas that have fueled breakthrough innovations, the rigorous translation of disruptive ideas into practice, and the importance of building interdisciplinary teams that turn scientific vision into patient impact.
