Abstract

Basalt fiber-reinforced composites are emerging as environmentally favorable alternatives to conventional fiber-reinforced composites. This chapter offers a thorough insight into the life cycle, cost considerations, and sustainability aspects of the basalt fiber-reinforced composites. This assessment addresses the whole value chain, from raw material extraction to manufacturing, using case scenarios and end-of-life scenarios with dedicated attention to end-of-life pathways and circular economy potential. Global warming potential, energy consumption, and resource depletion are among the various environmental impact categories evaluated using different Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) methodologies. Basalt fiber-reinforced composites are compared to traditional materials for multiple applications, and a comprehensive cost analysis is provided. Sustainability indicators are assessed based on resource efficiency, energy demands, carbon footprint, and socioeconomic factors. The study indicates that basalt fiber-reinforced composites offer significant environmental benefits and competitive cost structures in specific applications. However, challenges remain in refining production methods and managing end-of-life considerations.
