Person-centered psychotherapies (2nd ed.).
Abstract
Person-centered therapies have a strong and lasting impact on the practice of psychotherapy all over the world. The seminal contributions of Carl Rogers are now over 85 years in the making and continue to evolve. This second edition is a substantial revision of the first edition, originally published in 2010. There have been meaningful advances in multiple aspects of person-centered psychotherapy in theory, research, and practice. One of the greatest strengths of the second edition is that it provides therapists with ways to conceptualize therapy from different perspectives, each of which offers something of value to the client. The book is especially helpful to practicing therapists through discussions of relationship variables and response styles, as well as numerous illustrations of effective practice throughout the text. The book presents refinements in theory, describes progressions in practice, and reviews the history of person-centered therapy from the nondirective therapy of the early 1940s to the present. As in every theory of psychotherapy, there are ongoing differences, disagreements, controversies, and conflicts among person-centered scholars, researchers, and practitioners. The book addresses these differences in perspective about the nature and definition of what it means to be "person-centered" and how it might be optimally practiced. It discusses differences regarding the classical approach and recent advances as well as proposals for further advances. This book encourages and supports readers and therapists to become good observers of their therapeutic process by looking with an open mind and fresh eyes to assess what is effective and what is not.
