Abstract

In our original work, we examined the emergence of resistance to thirteen antibiotics introduced after 2017 or currently in development. The antibiotics were custom-synthesized or purchased from several distributors. Laboratory evolution demonstrated that clinically relevant resistance emerges within 60 days of antibiotic exposure for the priority Gram-negative ESKAPE pathogens. In the case of the tetracycline antibiotic, omadacycline, the level of antibiotic resistance in the evolved lines was up to 128 times higher than that of the corresponding controls. The omadacycline batches used in the published experiments were purchased from third-party vendor MedChemExpress.
