Abstract

Non-biodegradable rubber tire waste must be managed sustainably, including tire waste valorisation in engineering. The patented Gopi Sekhar (GPS) process (US 9550880B2, 2017) produces devulcanized rubber (DVR), a sustainable component in rubber composite formulations that improve energy dissipation dampers’ mechanical and dynamic performance. At vulcanization, natural rubber (NR) was mixed with activators, accelerators, and fillers, and 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% DVR by volume. The composites underwent standardized tests for damping and mechanical robustness, including ISO 37:2017 tensile strength, ISO 34 − 1:2015 tear resistance, ISO 48 − 4:2018 hardness, ISO 7743:C:2017 compression stress-strain response, ISO 3384:B:2011 stress relaxation behaviour at 7 and 100 days at 23 °C, and BS EN 15129:2018 double With (21.5 MPa ± 1.2) tensile strength, (530% ± 30) elongation at break, and (66 IRHD ± 1) hardness, the 20% DVR composite had excellent mechanical strength and damping. Our dynamic assessments showed excellent energy dissipation with a damping ratio of (6.3087 (dimensionless) ± 0.156) and a shear modulus of (0.6947 MPa ± 0.007). With (14% ± 1.5) relaxation at 7 days and 22% at 100 days, stress relaxation was stable. These results show that DVR improves rubber composite energy dissipation. The composite formulation with 20% DVR is ideal for rubber block dampers, improving seismic and vibration system dynamic performance and sustainable waste management.
