In this article, a typographical error was in the Introduction section (line 1): ‘Plastic pollution is a global issue, with 19–230 million tons of plastic waste entering aquatic ecosystems each year¹.’ should read ‘Plastic pollution is a global issue, with 19–23 million tons of plastic waste entering aquatic ecosystems each year¹.’. The original article has been corrected.
