Abstract

Green chemistry, synonymous with sustainable chemistry, endeavours to formulate chemical products and processes that curtail environmental and human health hazards, while advancing resource efficiency and sustainability. In India, the uptake of green chemistry principles in industries has surged owing to escalating environmental consciousness, regulatory mandates, and the acknowledgment of the economic advantages linked with sustainable practices. This chapter provides an overview of how green chemistry practices are implemented and their impact on the Indian industrial sector. In fact, it delineates the pivotal facets of green chemistry in Indian industries, encompassing the adoption of cleaner production technologies, the innovation of eco-friendly products, waste reduction methodologies, and the infusion of green chemistry principles into research, development, and manufacturing process-related activities. Further, it delves into the challenges and opportunities surrounding the adoption of green chemistry practices within the Indian context. It examines various factors such as technological barriers, policy frameworks, research and development initiatives, and collaborative endeavours among stakeholders that influence the implementation of green chemistry in India’s industrial landscape. Additionally, the critical role of green chemistry in driving sustainable industrial advancement in India has been highlighted with due emphasis shed on prevailing trends, obstacles, and future trajectories within this domain, and the need for concerted efforts to overcome challenges and capitalize on opportunities.
